Homeschool families in Minnesota have two field trip options available in March, one involving snow skis, the other ice – as in Ice Age. Even though many in the area have been excited to see the snow leave and warmer temperatures arrive, the Minnesota winter still has some fun to offer.
Homeschool days at Mount Kato in Mankato for skiing and snowboarding fun have been rescheduled due to the recent rain. The original plan was for a homeschool day with discounted rates for March 10th, but weather has forced Mount Kato to close for that day.
The current update is that Mount Kato will be reopening on Thursday, March 11th, at 9:30 and homeschool families can take advantage of discounted rates Thursday, Friday, or any other days next week.
Due to the warmer temperatures and rainy conditions, it is advised to call ahead before heading for the slopes. The staff at Mount Kato will be able to provide rate information and verify the conditions.
If skiing and snowboarding are not in your plans, perhaps you can still enjoy the cold as you learn about snow and ice. The Quarry Hill Nature Center in Rochester has just opened a new exhibit, Ice Age 2010, An Exhibit of Mammoth Proportions. The hours for this exhibit vary, but during the week they are open to the public from 2:00 until 5:00. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
The Ice Age 2010 Exhibit features replicas of a wooly mammoth and Dima, and infant mammoth mummy. The wooly mammoth replica comes from remains found in Wisconsin, the most complete specimen ever found in North America. Ice Age 2010 also includes replicas of a giant ground sloth and saber tooth cat skeleton.
