Despite the spring-like weather here in Minnesota lately, we have plenty of frozen ice on the lakes right now. That's good news, because you and your kids can take advantage of it for a pretty amazing science experiment.
Tim Jones shows how to do the easy wilderness survival trick in his You-Tube video (click on the video to the left to view it).
Basically, you find some clear ice from a source like a creek and break off a large chunk of it. Use a good pocket knife to carve it into a thick, flat, round chunk and then use your hands to rub all over it and smooth it from the melting.
From there, you simply direct the sunlight through it onto some dried grasses or other very flammable materials the same way you'd use a magnifying glass.
Pretty clever, eh?
What a great way to make use of a sunny winter day!
