Homeschool families from around Minnesota took part in a Crime Scene Camps program in Mankato yesterday. The class was a huge success and parents and children alike had fun participating.
Students learned about types of fingerprints, footprints, blood evidence, the steps in processing a crime scene and much more. They took their own fingerprints and determined what types they had, compared footprints to determine gaits and hypothesize about the suspect, learned to use fingerprint powders of all different types and even helped solve a staged crime by collecting and processing the evidence themselves.
One homeschooling mother told some other parents, "I was planning on just dropping the kids off but it was so interesting I had to stay!".
The class, which ran from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., contained families with children of all ages from around Mankato and as far away as Minneapolis and Westbrook.
Homeschool father Thom Jones ran the program, with the assistance of his son, Galen. Jones reported that he runs his crime scene programs all over the United States and has done programs in states such as Illinois, West Virginia, Nebraska and Colorado.
