Dragons amongst us?

The Dragon Chronicles on PBS, shown here in Indy on Sundays at 7:30, have become a favorite television viewing.  I rarely recommend television viewing, but there are exceptions and the Dragon Chronicles on PBS fit the criteria for outstanding television.

This series airs each Sunday on our local WFYI station at 7:30 pm,  and it follows the work of naturalist and explorer, Rom Whitaker,  as he travels around the world in search of the history of dragons in our cultures.

This weekend’s episode on July 12th, however,  has a special Indianapolis tie-in however, as it will provide a behind the scenes look at two Komodo Dragons that are in residence at our own Indianapolis Zoo until Labor Day.

If you haven’t been able to get to the zoo to see this wonderful exhibit, on July 27, Sid the Science Kid from PBS will be at the Indianapolis Zoo to broadcast from the zoo and the Komodo exhibit! Information about this special event will be broadcast on Sunday, July 12, on The Dragon Chronicles episode on WFYI.

You can click here to download a $2.00 off coupon to the zoo for the 27th.

And to encourage those readers amongst you, WFYI has even put together a complimentary reading list of related Dragon books.

As a young girl, I read the works of fantasy author, Anne McCaffrey in her Dragon Hold series and couldn’t wait for the next book to be published. I suppose it was my Harry Potter! Tales of dragons have always fascinated young people. From Sir George and the Dragon in the 1500’s to modern fantasy writers of dragon lore, dragon stories have  captured the imagination of young readers and even a few of us older ones!

I’m adding another book recommendation if your reader is between the ages of 10 and old age!, Dragons in the Our Midst by Bryan Davis, has developed a Christian fantasy book series that is attracting lots of viewers. They’re dynamic, fun to read with outstanding characters with a message that doesn’t preach but teaches in the most effective way.

As an adult, I’ve read all of them and give them my highest recommendation for upper elementary and teen reading. Bryan’s website does a wonderful job of presenting his philosophy as a writer, answers questions through a FAQ, and presents summaries of each of the books for you to peruse before you check them out from the library or buy them.

What a great learning package!

First watch The Dragon Chronicles on Sunday, July 11th at 7:30 on WFYI, your local PBS station

Second: Check out some awesome books on dragons, Komodo Dragons, dragon mythology  and learn more about dragons.

Third: Check out the Dragons in Our Midst Fantasy series by Bryan Davis for a fun summer reading experience the whole family can share together.

Fourth: Come to the Indianapolis Zoo on July 27 and see not only the Komodo Dragon Exhibit but meet Sid the Science Kid from PBS series.

Fifth: Make it an all day event and have a picnic in White River State Park by the canal and check out some local downtown sites.

It's like a mini vacation!!
