What do Irish stew, homemade bread and apple pie have to do with Labor Day?
After the first Labor Day parade in New York City in 1882, workers all over the city settled down to a meal of it!
Twenty thousand workers marched in a parade up Broadway carrying banners, demanding "eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for recreation."
From there the idea spread and in 1894, Congress voted it a federal holiday.
Today, Labor Day is celebrated every year on the first Monday of September. Many Americans consider Labor Day the last carefree day of summer.
