Affordable lessons for any family will be in abundance at this Saturday's Earth Day Bay Day celebration. Earth Day 2010 is 40 years in the making, but for the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation, it's a celebration that is only 11 years old and growing!
On Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 10:00a.m. - 5:00p.m., families can head to Cole Park on the Corpus Christi Bayfront and spend a day not only enjoying plenty of scheduled activities and events, but most importantly, getting valuable lessons on many environmental issues. This year's event is a call to action for community awareness and education on the environmental issues that affect our coastal region. Everything from recycling, to water issues, to conservation, and energy will be among the exhibits families will find during this event.
For homeschoolers looking to supplement or introduce environmental awareness and practices in their home, this event is a great place to start. In addition, since Earth Day is normally celebrated on April 22nd around the world, it's also a great time to incorporate environmental lessons into their own curriculum. If you can't make it out this weekend to the Earth Day Bay Day celebration, here are some resources to help get you started in helping your family to become more environmentally friendly:
- Visit local 'nature' venues at a time that is more convenient for you such as the Texas State Aquarium, the Botanical Gardens, the Aransas Pass Wildlife Refuge, the Padre Island National Seashore, the Cliff Moss Education Center at the Northwest library in Corpus Christi, and many more. These local resources have great education information on environmental awareness.
- Create Earth Day Art by using recyclable materials and making your own paper, making recycled jewelry, create an Earth Day book and include pages from your nature journal. Here's a link to a great art mural idea from Art Lessons for Kids that would be a nice cover.
- Participate in Adopt-a-Beach Day which is scheduled for the Coastal Bend area on April 24, 2010
- Visit environment education pages online including some of those originating in Corpus Christi.
