Sometimes you just don't know what you are getting when you purchase a curriculum or use free homeschool materials online. While most of them are adequate to very good, sometimes you start using a program that is not a good fit for your child. This has happened with the curriculum my daughter was using this year (fortunately I had a free liscense to evaluate it) so we have had to make changes.
As homeschoolers, one of our biggest goals is to individualize our children's education. Even the best curriculums are not a perfect match for every child. Parents must not only have a curriculum planned out for the year, but also a back up plan or two to get things to keep things moving should the orignal program not work out.
If you spend a small fortune for your child's curriculum, this might seem a bit more difficult to do. After all, who wants to lose ground for the school year and/or lose money by switching curriculum. The only answer to that is to make sure you hav fully evaluated a curriculum before spending a large amount of money, and then, if, and when things don't work out make small adjustments that will make it manageable for the rest of the year. Most people can make one or two simple changes, such as choosing a different math, or doing their own evaluations to make a mis-matched curriculum work.
