Where does Terrorism Start?

Where does terrorism come from? The concept of terrorism exists back to the days when Rome invaded Judea. In the first century Zealots and Sicarii would break into homes of the Roman soldiers and kill them in their sleep. The attacks were selective and occurred in heavy defended areas. It was here where terrorism first found its greatest power. Fear in a civilized society. Death could come from a stranger at anytime in the night. This lasted until the Sicarii committed mass suicide at Masada. Terrorism although considered begun by the people of Judea it didn’t end there.
During 11th century Hashshashin (assassin) an offshoot of Shia Muslims opposed Fatimid rule. They attacked various forts across Persia and were able to succeed in many cases but did not have a force large enough to attack directly. Their warriors would consume large quantities of Hashish and assassinate leaders of the Fatimid, Crusaders and Jews. The assassinations would be carried out in front of the troops for greatest effect. In many cases this disrupted army morale and command structure allowing the Hashshashin many victories.
The greatest perpetrators of terrorism were members of the Thugi (Thugee) cult in India. The Thugi existed for centuries attacking anyone at anytime in any part of the land. The weapon of choice was a garrote (two pieces of wood with a wire or string connecting the two.) The garrote was slapped to one side of the neck and the follow through carried the other back to the holder. A quip snap of the garrote could decapitate but normally it would cut off all airflow killing the person quickly. The total death count varies anywhere from 100,000-2,000,000 because the total number of thugee was unknown and the total population of India was unknown. In 1883, the British army ended the thugee cult.
The modern term terrorism and terrorist didn’t occur until the French Revolution where the noble class defined the revolutionists and their actions this way. It is impossible to know how long terrorism will last but this concept is dependant on one thing. Terrorism is a tactic of the weak against the strong. As long as these concepts exist terrorism will always be a viable option for the weak.
