Creating an enticing festive front door doesn’t have to be elaborate, a few simple accessories can add to your holiday decorating efforts."
Erickson suggests using:
- planters and urns that usually hold your summer plants
- grapevine or evergreen wreaths
- holiday stockings made out of fabric or cardboard
- seasonal doormat

Here is a lovely wreath from Plow & Hearth that features miniature lights. Their website has lots of choices.
Here is a Youtube video about making your own wreath using the greenery in your yard from the Virginia Farm Bureau titled In the Garden - Christmas Decorations. If your yard doesn't product this style or quantity of greenery, you can sometimes buy fresh cut boughs from your local plant nursery.
I like the middle ground.
Create your own wreath. Start with an artificial wreath from your favorite craft store and add holiday picks and ribbon. You choose the colors and style of the decorations. You could even use your existing ornaments, as long as they will survive the outdoor elements. As an added bonus, you can re-use the wreath for years to come if you store it carefully.
Decorate the sidelights by your front door. Make a paper wreaths in a size that will fit. Cut out snowflakes in white, or the decorating colors you choose. Here are several patterns from PaperSnowflakes to get you started. Glue or tape the snowflakes in a circular shape and tape to the glass. If your sidelights are narrow, just use a series of snowflakes in a straight or staggered line.

I prefer easy and reasonable.
Add a few inches of water to a bucket, and then arrange cut greenery from your yard. Okay, you could skip the water and add faux greenery. Just put something heavy in the bucket to hold it down in a strong wind.
