Imagine never paying a heating bill again. Imagine a day when we use old motor oil from our cars to create "free" heat in our homes. Well, that scenario is closer than you may think.
Auto Parts City in Gurnee, Ill. is doing just that. Auto Parts City recycles more than 24,000 gallons of used oil yearly using state-of-the-art waste oil equipment from Clean Burn, the world's leading manufacturer of used-oil furnaces, used-oil boilers, and used-oil recycling centers that generate free heat from motor oils and petroleum based fluids commonly used in all types of internal combustion engines. Auto Parts City recycles more than 12,000 vehicles annually and the used motor oil from those cars heats four different company buildings on more than 19 acres of land.
“We don’t pay a dime on outside heating costs because we’ve invested in waste oil furnaces and boilers to transform waste motor oil into free heat,” says Jay Brosten, vice president of Auto Parts City, Inc. “The older Clean Burn furnace we had at our previous facility successfully recycled our waste oil for the past 20 years with just regular maintenance. As we’ve grown our company, we’re growing our dedication to recycling the used motor oil we collect every day as part of our commitment to being good stewards of the environment.”
For its efforts, Auto Parts City has captured the prestigious title of “Green Business of the Year for 2010” along with receiving the enviable designation as a platinum status “Certified Green Business” by the Green Business League.
Clean Burn products are not available for residential use--yet--but it is possible that something like it will be available in the not-too-distant future.
Auto Parts City was honored for its environmentally-friendly practices in mid-April during the company’s Retail Center Grand Opening celebrations held in conjunction with Earth Day. Hundreds of people joined in activities that included ribbon-cutting ceremonies, remarks by local dignitaries and the presentations of the “Certified Green Business” designation and the “Green Business of the Year for 2010” award.
“Participating in this three-day event and knowing that our Clean Burn products enhance the recycling efforts at Auto Parts City is very gratifying for myself and everyone at our company,” says Tina Merrill, marketing and international sales manager with Clean Burn, Inc. “The environmental efforts of Auto Parts City in the Chicagoland area serve as an example of excellence for other businesses nationwide.”
A variety of Clean Burn boilers and furnaces recycle used motor oil and provide radiant floor heating to the Auto Parts City used parts and tire, fluid evacuation, dismantling and maintenance buildings. Used oil recovery is just one of the many recycling programs aggressively pursued by the company. On a yearly basis, Auto Parts City also processes and recycles approximately 18,000 tons of steel, 12,000 batteries, 48,000 tires and 36,000 gallons of gasoline.

There are 80,000 Clean Burn functional furnaces and boilers located throughout the world that burn millions of gallons of used-oil each year on-site, at the point of generation. This volume of used-oil would otherwise be transported on highway systems and pose a considerable risk to spills and/or contamination to the environment.
Clean Burn is an ENERGY STAR® partner. The company holds numerous industry certifications and works with the U.S. government, the Environmental Protection Agency and various associations to help coordinate the establishment of standards and regulations related to heat recovery and recycling efforts involving used motor oils.
