As the 4th of July quickly approaches, it's time to start planning patriotic cookouts or picnic recipes. Including locally-grown produce in these recipes from a "pick your own" farm provides a great family excursion or date for the days before the Fourth.

Here are a few farms in the area with red and blue produce:

Patterson's Apple Farm in Chesterland, Ohio strawberries.

Voytko in Auburn Township offers blueberries and raspberries.

West Orchard Farm Market in Perry, Ohio offers cherries and strawberries

Here's a sweet and easy recipe idea for your patriotic produce picks:

Berry American Trifle

What you'll need:

16 ounces of red berries (raspberries, strawberries or a combination of the two)

16 ounces of blue berries (blueberries, blackberries or a combination of the two)

1 tub of Cool Whip (thawed)

1 package of instant vanilla pudding (plus 2 cups of milk to make it)

1 Angel Food cake

How-to:

Cut the Angel Food cake up into 1-inch cubes.

Slice the strawberries in half.

Make the instant pudding according to the directions.

Using a trifle bowl, or any deep, glass dish (to show off the patriotic layers,) place half of the angel food cake cubes into the bottom of the dish. Then add half of the pudding to cover completely. Then layer half of the red berries and half of the blue berries. Top with half the Cool Whip. Repeat layers of angel food cake, pudding, red and blue berries, and Cool Whip with the remaining halves of ingredients.

Refrigerate for a few hours, or make a day ahead of time.
