The work-at-home transition

Working From Home
Working from Home

Many people dream of working from home but only a knowledgeable few are graced with the opportunity. This isn’t an opportunity that comes to you by luck, nor is it one that usually drops into your lap. This is an opportunity that you have to work quite hard to obtain. It requires planning and preparation, research, and plenty of self-analysis.

Before you venture off into starting your own work-at-home business, carefully consider if the work-at-home venture is for you. Sure, many of peel ourselves out of bed, make the commute to our jobs, and sit behind our desks, thinking about how much more productive and comfortable we would be if we were working from home. Still, is it really true? Consider your discipline. Effective work-at-home professionals must be more disciplined than the standard worker. There is no one watching over your productivity and watching your break times. You are responsible for that.

Consider if you require daily interaction. Are you the person who needs to personally interact with people on a daily basis? Do you thrive on office gossip and daily lunch outings? If so, work-at-home businesses and positions may not be for you. Working at home can place you in very isolated settings at time. Though you can come and go as you please, when you are working, you will be working alone. Consider your personal needs carefully.

Prepare yourself for your business transition. Price certain items such as health and life insurance. You will be responsible for the entire amount of this coverage, as a work at home professional. Consider your office needs. You will require a newer, up to date computer system with plenty of available memory. It is also a good idea to have a printer, fax, and scanner available. There are many multi-purpose printers that can meet all of these needs with one unit. You will require a quite room that will serve as your office, preferably with a door that locks. This will provide you with the privacy you will need if you are working while others are home.

Now that you’ve reviewed some of the consideration, it is time to consider the position itself. If you are employed with a company that promoted the work-life balance and enjoy your current position, speak with your superior about transitioning to the work-at-home environment. Many companies promote telecommuting for their employees, as it reduces costs and promotes productivity. While many companies choose not to make direct offers of telecommuting positions, this does not mean that the opportunities are not available. Start with your superior or human resources specialist about getting more information.

If you choose to leave your company to start your own business, or work for another employer from home, make a smooth transition. Never quit your job to work at home if you do not already have an established opportunity awaiting you. Start out slow. Many successful work-at-home professionals start out working just two or three days a week, before making the full time transition. This allows you to adjust with a safety net. If something does not work out or you decide that you just do not like working from home, you will still have your current position to fall back on.

Develop a network of work-at-home professionals. You will need a support group that can answer your questions and provide you with information on their experiences and hurdles. There are several established networks that are designed just for work-at-home professionals. Take out time to join the networks and discover what others have to say about their experiences and the companies in which they work. You may be surprised in what you find.
