Hollywood sign may disappear Thursday

   The famed Hollywood sign.

The famed Hollywood sign is slated to be covered for a preservation campaign this Thursday, February 11, and the LAPD decided it shouldn't be a secret.

Located in the Hollywood Hills and viewable from the Hollywood residents and tourists below, the sign may be used as a billboard for its own preservation for an unspecified length of time.

The group Trust for Public Lands plans to shroud the sign with a slogan "Save the Peak".  As they awaited final approval from the city today, the LAPD decided to announce it. LAPD wanted to release the information to the public that this disappearing act may occur, to avoid alarm and public confusion on Thursday.

The Chicago land firm that owns the area behind and above the Hollywood sign suggests constructing luxury homes along the Cahuenga Peak, and the ongoing battle to avoid real estate encroachment upon the historic sign and hilltop is heating up.

Ironically, the original sign, which read "Hollywoodland" was erected after some real estate investors named the area and wanted the signage to pinpoint where their acreage was available.  Later, the city dropped the final four letters and continued use of the sign as a beacon for the famous Los Angeles neighborhood beneath it.
