Total Solar Eclipse of July 22, 2009
The final countdown is here for the most awaited Total Solar Eclipse 2009, the longest solar eclipse our generation will experience until 2032. In the Western Hemisphere, the eclipse will occur on July 21. In the Eastern Hemisphere, it will be on July 22. This solar eclipse will occur once on Earth, but the difference in the dates account for the International Date Line. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is totally or partially covered.
The exact path of the solar eclipse in the Eastern Hemisphere can be found in the Total Solar Eclipse - July 22, 2009: Best places on Earth to view, extracted from NASA's report documented by Fred Espernak and Jay Anderson in 2008. The exact times are posted in Universal Time. Verify your local time as it relates to the Universal Time.
Those who are living in the Western Hemisphere will not experience the total solar eclipse first hand, but a live web coverage is broadcasted through several channels, primarily from China and Japan and relayed to the United States. Total Solar Eclipse 2009: Live web coverage - Next best places to view notes the websites of available live web coverage. It is important to find out when exactly will the broadcast occur in your local time zones and which day (July 21 in the Western Hemisphere and July 22 in the Eastern Hemisphere.)
If you are one of the thousands of explorers who are already in place in India, China, Japan and Marshall Islands, or any other country the solar eclipse will visit, note NASA's and other scientists' precautions regarding preventing eye injury or blindness due to viewing of solar eclipses. Their recommendations can be found here: Total Solar Eclipse 2009: Safety Precautions - Eye protection for safe eclipse viewing.
Although there is a chance of thunderstorms projected for July 22 in Asia and the Pacific Ocean, the exact time of the solar eclipse may be sunny and ideal for eclipse viewing. Forecasted weather for the affected cities can be found here: Total Solar Eclipse 2009: Weather forecast in India, Nepal, China and Japan. For exact weather information, visit Intellicast on the day of the eclipse's arrival.
Those who are venturing to China and Nepal, be advised for travel alerts and warnings issued by the US State Department for these countries. For detailed information, see Total Solar Eclipse 2009: Travel alert for China and travel warning for Nepal. Can we see it in philippines?
Johan,
Take a look at this map as it shows where the Philippines is located in relation to the path of the total solar eclipse.
See my latest article - Point #2.
In Hawaii, the partial solar eclipse will be seen and the Philippines is much closer to the path of the total solar eclipse. Do you have information being distributed in the country to address whether or not the partial solar eclipse will be seen? Find out through your trusted mass media sources.
If you are able to see the partial solar eclipse in the Philippines, read the article I wrote on eye protection as it offers instructions on how to create a pinhole viewing box. Never look at a partial solar eclipse with the naked eye as this causes eye injury and possible blindness.
Good luck na lang and be safe!
