Solange Magnano
Former beauty queen and model Solange Magnano, 38, died Sunday after suffering a pulmonary embolism following a cosmetic procedure in Buenos Aires. Magnano was Miss Argentina 1994.
Apparently, Magnano had undergone a gluteoplasty - a procedure also known as buttocks augmentation. The procedure is a fairly common plastic surgery procedure to improve the body contour.
Her procedure took place on Thursday, and she returned home to recuperate. Dr. Gonzalo Cortes y Tristan said she was rushed to his hospital Sunday with an acute respiratory deficiency. Her condition deteriorated until she suffered the embolism. An autopsy revealed that a blood clot traveled to her lungs and caused her death.
Magnano leaves behind a husband and eight-year-old twins.
This unfortunate reality brings to light an all-too-common, quick-fix mentality, often with a high price to pay. We are shown unrealistic standards of beauty, then put ourselves at great health risk to live up to the air-brushing and photo-shopping that inundate our media.
Plastic surgery procedures have risen over 60% in the last 10 years, yet 79% of women say they would be embarrassed if anyone outside of their close circle found out about it. This is another indication of the expectancy of life-long youth. As if it is realistic to think that our bodies we will remain tight, fit and wrinkle-free through old age. The best thing we can do to enhance our looks is to keep a positive attitude and spend more energy on a healthy body image.
Yours in health,
Guinevere Amadeo, LMP.

Comments
This is misreported. Ms Magnano did not die from implant surgery, or from a blood clot. What she received were direct injections of PMMA, microspheres of plastic, into the muscles of her buttocks at a questionable clinic. The needle hit a vein that carried the plastic substance into her lungs and brain, killing her. Such "butt shots" are increasingly popular in South and North America, but underreported because they affect the black and Latin population. Google up "butt shots" and see what these young women are doing to themselves in the quest for bigger booty. Most such shots in the US contain raw industrial silicone and are administered in homes by supposed nurses. Hopefully the tragedy of a famous person dying from this will bring the whole phenomenon into the light.

@ Dian: Thank you for the clarification and additional information. And yes, although very tragic circumstances, hopefully seeing the dangers associated with this type of body augmentation will help those considering make the best choice for their health.
