Results of the study of Merck's Zetia vs. Niacin may have people rushing to their doctors for Niaspan prescriptions, but leading edge cardiology is finding that cholesterol is not the major factor in heart disease. Instead, inflammation seems to be why arteries build up plaque. The reason statin drugs have been somewhat effective is because they have a tendency to reduce inflammation.
Cardiologists Stephen T. Sinatra and James C. Roberts have written an excellent book titled Reverse Heart Disease Now. Using research from their own practice as well as current medical studies and peer-reviewed journal articles, they have come up with a protocol for preventing dangerous plaque buildup in arteries as well as reducing it in people with coronary artery disease.
Some of their recommended blood tests for inflammatory markers are not routinely done by doctors. Important test for these markers, labs that perform them as well as optimal levels of these markers in the body are listed in the book.
With heart disease still being one of the leading causes of death, it is crucial for individuals to become educated and informed about prevention. This goes beyond simply taking a drug to change the level of cholesterol in the blood. Inflammation is a known contributor to heart disease and needs to be addressed. Also, reducing stress levels, taking appropriate supplements, avoiding trans fats in the diet and getting sufficient exercise are all part of a good preventative or healing program.

I just read where eliminating trans fats reduces your risk for CHD by 97%. So now we know what caused all those heart attacks - margerine! The book shows the number one cause of heart attack is actually stress, not high cholesterol levels. But I'm with you, it's silent inflamation - our number 1 enemy. Take fish oil, eat low glycemic, and exercise every day!
