Stress relief is as easy as a walk in the park

We can't eliminate most of the stress in our lives, but we can learn to manage it in a way that is healthy for us.

We all know that exercise offers untold health benefits for our physical bodies. But did you know that it also helps you to deal with stress? Studies show that even leisure activities such as walking, hiking and swimming will help you to deal with the stresses of everyday life.

Here’s how:

Exercise improves our mood.  After we exercise, our body releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins give us that sense of euphoria that runners often refer to as the ‘runners high’. Serotonin assists the brain in relaying messages regarding, mood, sleep and memory.

Exercise gives our brain a break.  Much like meditation, exercise brings our awareness to exactly what we are doing at  that moment. We feel the movement of our body and breath working together. By letting go of life’s distractions, we rest and refresh our brain and gain clearer focus for the remainder of the day.

Exercise gives us peace of mind through self confidence.  When we add exercise to our daily routine, we burn more calories which sheds excess weight.  We also tone and firm muscles as well as improve our cardiovascular system. When we look and feel better, we gain confidence in all aspects of our lives, decreasing the stress that a lack of confidence brings.

With spring right around the corner, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite places to de-stress:  McKinley Park.  Located at 3330 McKinley Blvd., you will find the perfect place to leave your worries behind. After a brisk walk around the walking/jogging path, which is ¾ of a mile, you can relax by the pond watching the ducks and geese. If you prefer an energetic game of tennis or soccer, a nice leisurely walk through the rose garden is a good way to wind down.

Whatever activity you decide to take up, make sure it is fun and something that you look forward to. This will help to ensure your success in managing your stress, and overall good health. If you see me jogging by, say ‘Hi’.

This is absolutely true... my weight loss clients learn that exercise also lowers the "fat thermostat" for those that find they plateau in their weight loss or weight gain, they have reached their "fat thermostat" level. The more one exercises, the less hungry they are as well. You never see a fat squirrel, but you certainly see them running around a lot! Our bodies were meant to move, not be sedentary...
