380,000 pounds of Marketside label deli meat that is exclusively distributed to Walmart has just been recalled by a New York company called Zemco due to possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. According to Medicine Net, the official definition of Listeria is: "A group of bacteria capable of causing miscarriage (spontaneous abortion), stillbirth and premature birth and which can also cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and persons with a weakened immune system."

Listeria monocytogenes originate from soil and water and are normally killed in food once the cooking process is complete. Occasionally foods like hot dogs and deli meat will become contaminated by Listeria after cooking but before packaging due to cooking areas not being sanitized properly. While healthy individuals do not necessarily need to panic about the recall of deli meat, it would be a wise precaution to avoid lunch meat sold at Walmart under the Marketside label. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems should absolutely avoid the recalled deli meats specified in the bullet points below as a listeria infection can be fatal for these groups of people.

The specific Marketside Deli Meat Products at Walmart that Have Been Recalled Are:

  • 32.67 pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches - Virgina Brand Ham, Bacon, pickles, and peppers" with the number 17804 1300 printed on the package
  • 25.5 pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches - Angus Roast Beef " with the number 17805 1300 printed on the package
  • 25.5 pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches - Black Forest Ham " with the number 17800 1300 printed on the package
  • 28.49 pound cases of "Marketplace Grab and Go Sandwiches - Hot Ham, Hard Salami, Pepperoni, Peppers" with the number 17803 1300 printed on the package

The recalled Marketside deli meats at Walmart were manufactured from between June 18th and July 2nd 2010. The "use by" dates that were printed on the packages of the recalled deli meats are marked from between August 20th 2010 and September 10th 2010.

Initial Listeria infection symptoms (also known as Listeriosis) can include: fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. If the infection spreads to your central nervous system you may develop the following symptoms: headache, stiffness of the neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions or seizures. If you experience any of these symptoms or other unusual side effects after eating contaminated Marketside deli meat from Walmart you should contact your doctor immediately.
