Healing herbs for cold and flu season

Here in Portland our cold and flu season is like any other- we head for the drug stores to stock up on the latest medicines promised to cure or ease our symptoms,  usually with little or no results.

There is no MEDICAL cure for the common cold, but there are herbs and ingredients in your kitchen that work better than any chemical medications.

A natural antibiotic, this is a tea tested on many subjects by this author with excellent results, and used for centuries by some Native American residents.  Not only do you heal faster, but you are sparing your liver and other vital organs from the damage done by chemical medicines.

For best results, use organic ingredients only.

One handful of fresh sage, added to two quarts water.  Bring to a boil.  Allow to simmer  20-30 minutes on low heat; remove and let sit until cool.   Remove sage and  squeeze out excess water.

Add raw, unprocessed, unfiltered honey;   about 3 tablespoons, or more to taste.

Squeeze half of a fresh lemon into the mixture.  Then add two pinches of cayenne pepper.

May be stored in glass container in refrigerator for 24 hours;  heat to warm as needed.  Do not boil.

Drink as a tea or use two tablespoons every few hours.  Do not give honey to children under two years old.

This remedy must be made fresh and cannot be stored for later use.  Shelf date is 24 hours.

Healing Properties

Not only is raw, organic honey the best thing for colds, it also has many immune enhancing properties that protect against  other bugs and germs.  Cayenne Pepper is one of the best natural spices that will instantly open your airway and allow your lungs to clear and help you breathe better.  For minor congestion, just  use a dab of cayenne on your tongue. (Have some water handy!)   Sage alone can be made into a tea for sore throats and cold like symptoms, and enhances the vitamins in the Lemon, which is chock full of natural vitamin C.

Some foods to eat  during cold and flu season are blueberries, apples, chili, veggie soup, garlic, parsley and oatmeal, to name a few.  Drink clear fluids such as teas, water and water with lemon.

Foods to avoid are milk, meats, cheeses and  soda.
