Debating health care to include prevention

Barack Obama said "Our health care system has become a disease care system and the time for change is well over due"

Everyday on the news and all about town, people are hotly debating the health care issue as if it is only an insurance issue. Clearly health care reform is gravely needed and the insurance companies must be called to task regarding the injustices and ineptness that abound and for which has paved the way to voracious greed without much thought to patient care. But perhaps the insurance companies aren't the only ones who need a little light shined upon.

Affordable, quality health care must be made available to every American citizen. We can not call ourselves a civilized society with heart without it. But health care is not just about taking care of the sick. Health care needs a broader definition to include the prevention of dis-ease and the harnessing of Vibrant Health.

What if we became a culture with a health care system that in addition to taking care of it's people when they are sick was also dedicated to the education of healing and the prevention of dis-ease. What if we were able to expand our narrow thinking of endless medications and operations to include systems of health care that are drug-less and life enhancing? What if sound nutritional education was part of our health and healing process?

How about if the truth on the corruption in the medical and drug industries was revealed ? Wouldn't it be great to see an end to the proliferation of drug ads on TV? Replaced by non biased truly healthy information designed to teach us how to take care of ourselves and our families promoting healing foods instead of excess and unnecessary drug use.

And let's not forget to address the way food is produced in this country. How about some reforms there. What if eating healthy organic wholesome food was a requirement in all of our schools? What if selling food with harmful ingredients at restaurants, hospitals and supermarkets was no longer desired, or against the law or at the very least super expensive with glaring labels that read BEWARE - Your Health is at Risk.

How about giving companies who provide real true healthy choices rewards that will support more growth and keep prices competitive while taxing those companies who continue to produce "food" which is not really food at all.

If we want to see a change in our current 2.3 trillion dollar spending on health care, much of which goes to trying to cure eating induced diseases resulting from poor quality food, we must address these issues as well.

I totally agree, Rochelle! People get sick in the first place because our political system has not made having a healthy planet a priority. For one thing, if people had healthful, locally grown organic food available to them everywhere--schools, sporting events, camp grounds, shopping malls, social events, takeout stores and restaurants, hospital cafeterias--then fewer people would be getting sick to begin with. Thanks for writing this, Rochelle!

Thank you for this article and it's very enlightening. We should go to the rudimentary level and teach the American people how to eat, what to eat and how much is the appropriate portion size. We should look at food to not only serve our pleasures but also a function to make our bodies more healthy. We need the schools to educate the young and the buy off from food manufacturers to produce more healthy foods. We are what we eat!
