Michelle Obama scheduled to team up with Mayor Rahm Emanuel for a special summit with other city mayors and CEOs of grocery stores on Tuesday, October 25th. Their top agenda is to deal with the problem of food deserts. People have to go four miles for fresh foods and produce in some areas.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Windy City LIVE TV show Tuesday morning discussing this topic. It is one of his main concerns and goals to help the city of Chicago. He envisions improving economic-development, job growth and public health.
Childhood Obesity is one of the first lady’s main issues she is working on and the end of food deserts will affect healthy eating in neighborhoods dealing with this. 1 in 7 people in Chicago live in a food desert. Michelle will be touring a Walgreens on the south side, on 11 E. 75th Street that now sells produce and grocery items. She will also will be going to Iron Street Urban Farms on 3333 S. Iron Street, which is a seven-acre site where healthy food is grown locally.
Like the reporter of Chicago Sun Times, Mary Mitchell says, it is intriguing to see how power works. There is no better role model than Michelle Obama to educate young mothers in poverty areas on raising healthy families. Michelle Obama grew up on the south side of Chicago and is a mother herself. She is very dedicated and passionate about this cause.
