Macy's 20th annual Union Square Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony details

The Annual Macy's Tree Lighting Ceremony in San Francisco's Union Square

One of San Francisco's best attractions during the holiday season is the Macy's Christmas Tree in Union Square.

On Friday, the Macy's tree will be officially lit in all its annual glory to an audience of many Bay area residents, old and new. San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito will be on hand for the lighting, as will “American Idol” singer Anoop Desai.

The tree arrived in San Francisco on Monday in a five-axle low-bed semi and when it did arrive to it's Union Square spot,  it was promptly lifted from the truck by a crane and guided into a shallow hole in the pavement on the square.  Crews worked through the night to ensure it was properly put up.

The Macy's Christmas tree will celebrate it's 20th annual tree lighting with events begining at 6 p.m. Friday Nov. 27.  Additionally you can contribute to UCSF Chilren's hospital by sponsoring a light.  During the past six years, more than $800,000 has been raised for Compass Care, the palliative care program at UCSF Children's Hospital. This year's ceremony will be held in San Francisco's Union Square on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. The tree will remain lit through Jan. 1.
