In an interview about his upcoming film, The Lovely Bones, producer Peter Jackson mentioned that the filming of the Hobbit movies will probably be delayed until the middle of 2010. The movie has still not been officially "green lit" by Warner Brothers. Previous reports had set the beginning of production in March.
Translating from an article published Friday, November 28, 2009 on a German website, moviereporter.net, TheOneRing.net quotes Jackson as saying,
“We’re currently working on the second script which we hope to have completed by the end of this year or beginning of next. When the scripts are completed, we can begin with the exact calculation of the necessary budget. We hope to start filming in the middle of next year. However, we’ve received no green light from the studio yet.” (- translated from German – read the original quote here).
The largest German Lord of the Rings fansite, herr-der-ringe-film.de, reported today (November 29, 2009) that their sources are saying shooting is now scheduled for July, 2010. The speculation is the delay has something to do with the financial troubles of MGM, which has partnered with Warner to finance and distribute the films. It could be that Warner is trying to buy out MGM's share, but the forbearances the lion's creditors keep giving are delaying that possibility. (See Hobbit and MGM financial woes update.)
