Last weekend, MTV caught up with Hugo Weaving, who played Elrond in the Lord of the Rings movies, and is expected to reprise the role in the upcoming Hobbit movies.
Weaving explained that Elrond only appears briefly in JRR Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit. Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves spend a brief visit at his “Last Homely House” (Rivendell). Elrond is able to read invisible details on their map, and give them invaluable advice for their journey.
Although his involvement in the book is brief, what Peter Jackson and crew have in mind for perhaps expanding the role in the movies is unclear. While the films will only cover the time frame referenced in The Hobbit, they will also show details about the White Council, which deals with the growing threat from the Necromancer (Sauron). The details are not in the book, but are mentioned in other works in Tolkien's legendarium.
Gandalf is part of the White Council, which also includes (among others) Elrond, Galadriel and Saruman. The role of Gandalf is to be reprised by Ian McKellen. There has been much speculation about whether the actors who portrayed Galadriel and Saruman (Cate Blanchett and Christopher Lee) will also return.
