AIDS.gov Facing AIDS campaign
World AIDS Day is Tuesday, December 1. It is a day that was created in 1988 to increase awareness, raise money, fight the stigma, and improve education. This year's theme is "Universal Access and Human Rights". 33 million people live with AIDS worldwide and the epidemic is showing no signs of slowing down. Now more than ever, it is important to show your unification with this cause by supporting an event on this important day. Are you looking for a way to participate in World AIDS day? Look no further. Your "to-do" list has been made. Here's a comprehensive list of the activities taking place in and around the city. Check back here periodically for updates.
- Monday, November 30- AIDS Institute and the National Medical Association present Walk the Red Carpet for a cause. A reception and premiere of the film "God, Me, and HIV?" - Tuesday, December 1 11 am- The World AIDS Day unveiling of the Senior Education Quilt at the Congress Heights Senior Wellness Center 3500 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., SE
- Tuesday, December 1 8:30 am- 10:30 am The World Bank Group presents Keeping the Promise, Investing in the Future Linking HIV/AIDS, Food Security and Maternal/Child Health. - Tuesday, December 1 12 noon. DC FIghts Back 'Systems Failure' Rally. A rally and march from Lafayette Park (in front of the White House) to Freedom Plaza (in front of City Hall). For more information click on the link, DC FIghts Back Rally.
- Tuesday, December 1 6:30- 9:00 pm. The DC Center presents Our Heroes; a collection of striking black and white photographs honoring the people who have fought the battle against HIV/AIDS. 1111 14th st., NW. For more information click on the link, Our Heroes.
- Tuesday, December 1 4-7pm Metro Teen AIDS is providing free HIV Testing at The Covenant House 2001 Mississippi Avenue, SE. 6-9 pm Cocktails and Conversation at The Lotus Lounge 1420 K st., NW.
- Tuesday, December 1. The Whitman Walker Clinic will host several events;12 noon "HIV Vaccine Research: A New Chapter" luncheon at 1640 Rhode Island Ave., NW. For more information visit www.thedccenter.org. The annual candle light vigil will be at 5:30 pm in Dupont Circle in Northwest. The Red Hot Night at Hotel Rouge Benefit will be from 5:30- 8:30 pm at 1315 16th st.,NW. There will also be an exhibit entitled "Ads vs. AIDS" form 6:00- 8:00 pm at the Longview Gallery 1234 9th st. - Tuesday, December 1. 10:30 am- 4:30 pm. La Clinica del Pueblo is offering educational information, free testing, and street outreach. It will culminate with a vigil to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS. 2831 15th st. NW
- Tuesday, December 1 7 pm. The DC Catholic AIDS Network will have a candlelight vigil at Saint Luke Catholic Church 4925 East Capitol st. SE
- Friday, December 4 6:00-9:00 pm. BET's Rap It Up Campaign in conjunction with Metro Teen AIDS will sponsor the Real Talk Festival. There be a lyrical contest judged by local rap star King Slim. For more information click on the link Metro Teen AIDS
