- 1493: Christopher Columbus steps ashore the island of Puerto Rico that he saw for the first time the day before and names it San Juan Bautista.
- 1794: Jay’s Treaty is signed between the United States and Great Britain, a treaty to resolve any lingering problems left from the Revolutionary War.
- 1863: President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of a military cemetery at the site of a Civil War battle in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
- 1943: Nazis destroy the Janowska concentration camp in western Ukraine, murdering over 6,000 Jews.
- 1969: Apollo 12 makes man’s second landing on the moon and astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean become the third and fourth humans to walk on the moon.
- 1979: Iranian leader Ayatollah Buholla Khomeini orders the release of 13 women and black American hostages being held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

- 1997: Bobbi McCaughey gives birth to septuplets, the second known case where all seven babies are born alive and the babies become the first set of septuplets to survive infancy.
- 1998: The U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee begins impeachment hearings against President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal.
- 2004: Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson of the NBA team the Indiana Pacers charge into the stands and fight with fans during a game in Detroit. A fan is sentenced to 30 days in jail for assaulting Artest, Jackson is suspended for 30 games and Artest suspended for the rest of the season.

Today is International Men’s Day in Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, India, Jamaica, Malta, Hungary, United States, Canada, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United Nations. It is a day of events focusing on men and boy’s health, gender relations, finding positive male role models and promoting gender equality. It is also Flag Day in Brazil, Liberation Day in Mali and a celebration in Puerto Rico for the discovery of the island by Christopher Columbus in 1493.
