The stereotype of a hip hop artist in Toledo is quite simple: he causes trouble, degrades women, and only cares about himself. Proven true in most circumstances, a rapper has little right to be upset. Knowing that there was much to be done to reverse the stigma, one hip hop group decided to take action.
Hustle Hand Entertainment, a highly respected label comprised of Toledo rappers, singers, producers and promoters, used their ties in the community to help the children of Lucas County. They formed Hands Over Hearts, their non-profit organization, and conceptualized their first charity basketball game, Dunkin' for Donations. Each basketball team is made up of a local entertainment group, and to be granted entry, onlookers must donate a canned good and/or unopened toy, to be donated to the Lucas County Children's Services.
Dunkin' for Donations is sponsored by Owens Community College, who believe that Hands Over Hearts is a step in the right direction of changing what people think about Toledo hip hop artists. The event takes place Sunday, December 20, at Owens Community College from 6-10 pm.
