While large major record labels may mean better promotion and easier bookings, smaller more focused record labels can ensure artists that they know their genre and sometimes the best genre's contacts.
One such production company is Streetlight Music. Commandeered by Tori "Flossy" Harrelson, Streetlight Music began as a collaboration between businessman Flossy and musician/producer John "Fingazz" Stary and has since grown to include Jeff Barringer, master mixer and DJ who has worked with such talents as Duran Duran, Finger Eleven, Depeche Mode, and Taylor Dayne.
After their first two projects, "Under the Streetlight" and "The Inland Empire Strikes Back" associated with artist Lunch and Homeless Nation, the company has continue to develop as a premier record label in the area and a close connection to area radio stations. To date, they have worked with many well-known as well as up & coming hip hop artists in the southern California area. Their connections have led to albums featuring Snoop Dog, Diamonique, Korupt, Bad Azz, Low Life Gangstas, and others.
Streetlight Music has also found a niche in producing international artists, especially latin hip hop artists including Chino Brown, Light Shade of Brown, Royal T and Ms. Sancha among others.
Perhaps most notably is Streetlight's association with Roscoe Umali, considered the "freshest Filipino" who embodies all aspects of the hip hop artist - storyteller, emcee, and battler. One of Roscoe's newest releases, "Never Fallin" has done well on the charts, which is no surprise given his talent and his demand for collaborations with such artists as Colby O'Donis, Aubrey O'Day, Snoop Dog, E40, Jimmy Marsh, and Donnie Wahlberg. Understandably proud of the hip hop culture, Roscoe also released an album aptly titled "I Love My DJs" which is a mixtape of various hip hop artists. Local Puget Sound residents may have seen Roscoe most recently when he performed in Federal Way last November.
Roscoe has most recently worked with Go Gettas, a yong hip hop group in the Southern California area, and their song, "On My Hype". Readers can view and comment on the official music video.
Flossy and Streetlight Music continue to act wisely in their production and promotion of their artists and music. Recruiting fans of their artists, he has succeeded in not only getting radio play but also getting songs to climb the charts. Readers can find Flossy daily offering his life-learned wisdom on twitter and can contact him through his website. Fingazz and DJ Jeff Barringer are also on twitter where DJ Jeff Barringer shares his weekly remix treats and is featured every Saturday and Wednesday on NKAirplay Radio.
