Joey "Sawchosiz" Powell got his start in hip hop at a young age. His creativity was spawned by his curiosity with music. And, his parents encouraged that curiosity by not censoring the music he listened to on the radio.

Like many young artists, Sawchosiz developed his craft in the school cafeteria trying to sound better than the other young rappers in his class.  In high school, he made his first public appearance via KUBE 93.3's Roll Call. Sawchosiz explains, "Roll Call was a a 15 minute call-in freestyle rap segment wherein the host would allow up to 6 callers to freestyle live on air about a given topic on Kube 93.3 at 10:15pm Monday through Friday, hosted by DJ Bobby O along with Eddie Francis and Tiffany Warner". He excelled at this impromptu activity and continued performing on the Roll Call off and on from 2000 through 2004. The Roll Call is no longer being hosted on KUBE, but during its run, it offered many local artists a an opportunity for free publicity.

Since his success on KUBE 93.3, Sawchosiz has performed in multiple venues throughout the northwest including Washington and Oregon. Most recently, he was seen at John Henry's in Eugene, Oregon on July 25th.

Sawchosiz feels his song, "Follow Me", is the best biography he can provide for his fans. The song talks about the rejection he has received as an artist and also the realness his lyrics speaks despite that rejection. It is his philosophy not to hide behind what others think hip hop should be. Anything he sees or experiences is fair game for his music.

You can hear other songs by Sawchosiz on his mixtapes - Young Kal-El Mixtape, Volume 1 and Kal-El is the Future Mixtape, Volume 2. He is currently finishing Kal-El, vol. 3 which will be available for free download like the first two volumes.

I had no clue who this musician was until I read your article. Next time when I hear the name, I may remember!
