One of the best rivalries in the NBA starts tonight -- The LA Lakers vs the Boston Celtics. They last faced each other in 2008 Championship when the Celtics beat the Lakers in six games. Their final game, the Celtics destroyed the Lakers with a score of 131 to 92. The two teams have played each other in a total of 11 championship games, with the Celtics wining the majority of the games. Still, the trash talk continues with many notable celebrities tweeting about which of their favorite teams will win and in how many games.
One group of celebrities have taken it a step further. Artists DJ Felli Fel, DJ Warrior, Clinton Sparks, Ray J, Ice Cube, Chino XL, Jimmy Marsh, Donnie Wahlberg, Roscoe Umali, New Boyz, and Lil' Rob have teamed up to create a mixtape called simply "The Celtics Lakers Digital Mixtape". The artists battle supporting their respective teams. The Lakers Anthem premiered on Power 106 in Los Angeles on June 1st while Bad Newz (The Celtics Anthem) debuted on Jamn 94.5 in Boston on June 2nd. The mixtape containing both songs dropped on June 3rd just prior to the first game of the championship series.
The idea of creating a song in support of one's team during the NBA championship is not a foreign one to the Puget Sound area. During the 1993 championship series, Sir Mix-A-Lot wrote and performed "Not in Our House" on behalf of the Seattle SuperSonics.
You can find all three tracks below. What are your thoughts on artists representing their favorite teams during their championship series? Remember hip hop is all about emceeing, story telling, and battling. In this case, it is definitely an issue of battling.
