J. Cole discusses HBCU cheerleader controversy

Fayetteville State University's cheerleaders joined J. Cole's in his video for his uber-hot track, entitled "Who Dat." Unfortunately, controversy followed shortly there-after as the administrators of Fayetteville State expressed disappointment with the cheerleader's appearance. According to the Fayetteville Observer;

Top administrators of Cumberland County schools and Fayetteville State University are steaming over an explicit rap video that features student cheerleaders and band members.Schools Superintendent Frank Till Jr. issued a statement Tuesday demanding the new J. Cole video “Who Dat” be pulled immediately from the Internet and TV. FSU Chancellor James Anderson apologized in a letter to alumni for Bronco cheerleaders who appear in the video. It was filmed this spring in Fayetteville, where J. Cole grew up.

 In a short response via MTV news, J. Cole cited a generational conflict as the foundation of this situation. What are your thoughts?

    The cheerleaders in that video did nothing wrong! They presented themselves in a proffesional manner. The moves were not explicit nor were the uniforms. You all cannot blame them for the lyrics to the song! They didn't write nor perform the lyrics. They did what they were asked according to what they were told...So they should not have to bear the weight of all of this!

    I think that is was a great video. How many teachers have we encountered that have discouraged us from following our dreams? He is showing the community that you can. Just like his song I got a dollar and a dream adults sometimes try to crush them but by using FSU and ee smith in the video the buzz will be wow what is so great about those schools I must attend. I have students that never thought about college until the video. So I am setting up a tour next school year for my 7th grade students. Who dat....thank you J cole

    I don't condone the cursing. There are younger kids in this video. I also do not think the cheerleaders and band should be admonished, after all they are in College and are adults. They are only guilty of being in the same age group as J Cole. I also did not see the cheerleaders do anything more than what they normally do on the football field or basketball court. I've seen some groups that were a lot more erotic.

    An HBCU being upset about a "non- issue" what a surprise! I don't support the cussing and I'm sure if you walk across FSU's campus on any given day you will hear worse from the student body. FSU is getting more exposure because of this video. FSU is a regional school (NC & SC), you don't build your marketing campaign around J. Cole, but at least your school name is out there to a new audience that might be interested in what you have to offer. I bet you the Chancellor didn't talk about FSU's 30% graduation rate in 6 years while he attacked this artist. Let's focus on that goal instead of the cheerleaders performing in a video. Did anyone ask the coach/equipment manager why they checked out the uniforms on a day when they weren't scheduled to perform for the university? Guess we aren't asking those questions!

    These rappers need to get themselves out the gutter and stop all the profanity. If they really have a story to be told they ought to be able to tell it without all the cursing. To me, it is inappropriate to have young boys in this video. I can understand why the chancellor was upset about it. It's about time somebody started speaking up about these profane artists who are making money off gullible fans willing just to accept anything!
