Gucci Mane has been jailed since Thursday, November 12. He will remain in Atlanta’s Fulton County jail until May 2010. According to an MTV report, Gucci Mane, real name Radric Davis, violated his probation for a 2005 assault case by testing positive for cocaine and marijuana, failure to perform community service and obtain permission for travel.
Gucci joins New Orleans-based Lil’ Boosie, Lil’ Wayne and, fellow Atlantan, T.I., in facing imprisonment. T.I. is currently serving a year and a day for illegally attempting to purchase firearms.
While rap is perhaps the only industry where jail time is not entirely damaging to an artist’s reputation, legal troubles can stall the hottest careers.
Lil’s Boosie’s rise has been inevitably halted due to a four year sentence for violating house arrest on a September marijuana possession charge.
Similarly, Lil’ Wayne may face difficulties in launching his effort, Rebirth. The repeatedly delayed project is Wayne’s attempt to expand his style with a rock-rap hybrid. His next court appearance, December 15, is the same as the album’s drop date. No word if Rebirth will be pushed back again. Wayne will begin his one year sentence in February.
Prior to returning behind bars, Gucci was preparing for the December 8 release of his second album, The State vs. Radric Davis. The single, “Spotlight” dropped last month.
Unlike T.I. prior to sentencing, Gucci will not be readily available for any promotional activities for his album. It is unclear whether the release date will be pushed back.
T.I. used his pending incarceration and house arrest as a time for introspection, reflected on the critically acclaimed 2008 album, Paper Trail. He was also able to parlay a court mandated 1000 hours of community service into youth outreach that ultimately helped his career. His MTV Road to Redemption reality series gave viewers a firsthand look at how the former Bankhead resident hoped to change his life and become a positive influence to others.
Presently, Gucci Mane does not appear as fortunate. Though he dissed T.I. in the past, he is now receiving the benefits of shared their shared legal representation. Lawyer, Dwight L. Thomas, who assisted in T.I.’s firearms quandary, stated that Gucci is on a ‘road to recovery’ to be free from drugs and alcohol.
