ISKON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) also known as Hare Krishna Movement was founded in 1966 in New York City, by His Divine Grace, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. ISKON is a worldwide association of devotees of Lord Krishna with the objectives of promoting the wellbeing of society by teaching the science of Krishna consciousness according to Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic scriptures. ISKON today is a worldwide confederation of 6000 temple devotees and 190,000 congregational devotees.
ISKON across the world imbibes the teachings of Vedas, the knowledge of Absolute Truth. The congregational chanting of “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare” is the maha-mantra recited by Sri Chaitanya, the great disciple of Sri Krishna. The maha-mantra is said to purify the soul and mind and is an effective way to come near to God. Sri Chaitanya was a great devotee of Sri Krishna and was responsible to initiate and spread the knowledge and wisdom of Sri Krishna.
The ISKON San Jose temple was established with a mission to propagate spiritual knowledge to society at large and to educate all people in the techniques of spiritual and natural way of life. The movement aims at bringing the people from all walks of life together and nearer to Krishna. The movement also encourages the sankirtana movement, and congregational chanting of the holy name of God.
