Happy Palindrome Day! The dawn of a new decade, 2010 is making a grand entrance. Finely dressed in a rare and lovely New Year's Eve blue moon and an even more rare palindromic date, 2010 is the talk of the town.
A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that reads the same in both directions, a mirror image of itself. It is said that there will be only 12 palindrome days in the 21st Century using a format of MM-DD-YYYY. The first palindromic date of the century was 10-02-2001; today is the second, being 01-02-2010, and the third will be 11-02-2011. The final palindrome day in the 21st century will be 09-02-2090. Obviously, the frequency of palindromic dates will vary depending on the configuration. In some places the common date configuration is DD-MM-YYYY.
In a recent article in The Beacon, Aziz Inan, a college professor of engineering, wrote symmetry "possesses the magic power of drawing our attention." Inan goes on to say symmetry "conveys a sense of the aesthetic, of balance, beauty, equality, evenness, harmony, neatness, perfection, pleasure and/or simplicity."

In college one of my campus job co-workers HAD to set her alarm clock with a palindrome. Since then whenever I hear about palindromes I think of her....geez WHAT was her name?!
Gina, that an unusual idiosyncracy. Hmmm. Wonder what that energy was about in her life.
