After two weeks of the 2010 volleyball season, a handful of teams have made strong statements as contenders for regional titles.
Preseason No. 1 Cypress Woods has lived up to expectations, going undefeated through two weeks and 16 matches. The Wildcats won the Cy-Fair ISD tournament in the opening weekend and captured the championship trophy in the Spring Branch ISD tournament last weekend.
On Tuesday, Cy Woods opened their District 17-5A schedule with a three-set win at Cypress Creek (25-20, 25-13, 25-12) to move their record to 17-0. This weekend, the Wildcats will take part in the Nike Volleyball Classic at Pearland. The tournament, which boasts a strong field, will provide the last tough non-district test for Woods before they resume their district season in earnest next week.
Klein Oak lost to Cy Woods in the CFISD tournament championship, and then the Panthers lost to Katy in the SBISD tournament semifinal match. But, Christy Mewis' squad has not tasted defeat in any of their other 14 matches in the first two weeks.
The Panthers posted an impressive win over a tough Clear Creek team in the third-place game of the SBISD tourney on Saturday. Klein Oak has quickly jumped to the head of the class in District 13-5A.
Despite back-to-back Saturday losses to Cy Woods and Klein Oak, Clear Creek had an impressive second week. The Wildcats posted two wins on the road at Stratford and a win over Kingwood during a seven-match win streak that began the previous weekend in Duncanville.
The Wildcats had gone 6-3 in a grueling first-week schedule that included a weekend trip to the Dallas area for eight total matches over the weekend, including seven in the Duncanville tournament and one against Arlington Martin. Clear Creek went 10-5 through the first two weeks.
While Klein Oak hasn't solved Cypress Woods, Cy-Fair hasn't figured out how to beat the Panthers in two matches. But the Bobcats, who came into the season having to replace Chiney Ogwumike, went 8-2 in the first two weeks of play.
On Tuesday, Cy-Fair opened 17-5A play with a 3-0 sweep of Langham Creek. They will play in the Pearland tourney this weekend.
Seven Lakes has started 12-5, despite going 3-3 in the Allen tournament last weekend. Farah Holder's squad captured the Katy ISD tournament crown in the opening weekend.
This week marks the third and final week of non-district play, with the majority of area schools opening district play next week. Along with 17-5A, the other ten-team district, District 23-5A, also began district play on Tuesday.
