The Sealy Tigers lost some key offensive weapons to graduation after the 2009 season. Seniors Dexter Downey, who rushed for over 1200 yards, and Bradley Miller, who had 1,144 yards receiving, helped lead Sealy to an 11-1 record and an average of 43 points per game.
But enough talent remains from last year’s squad to make people believe that the football haven west of Katy is poised for more of the same in 2010.
TexasHSFootball.com posted its Class 3A preseason state rankings on Thursday and Sealy is picked as the top-ranked team in Region III and is ranked No. 5 in the state.
Lucas Lovejoy, who lost to Abilene Wylie in the 3A Division I 2009 state semifinal, earns the THSF selection as the No. 1 team going into the new season. Brownwood, Carthage and Cuero join Sealy to round out the top five.
For Sealy, Quarterback Cody Barrett will attempt to duplicate his junior season, in which he completed 52.6% of his passes for 2,097 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also rushed for 247 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Sophomore Jowan Davis is the heir apparent to Downey at running back and senior Gabe Hamner will likely be the primary receiving target for Barrett. Davis, who played on the varsity squad in 2009, ran for nearly 350 yards in limited playing time. He posted 91 yards rushing in Sealy’s 49-28 win over Smithville.
The first order of business for the Tigers will be to navigate a realigned District 24-3A that includes Bellville, Columbus, Stafford and Brookshire Royal, who is ranked No. 13 in the THSF poll.
