TexasHSFootball.com continued its week-long release of its preseason high school rankings with the Class 4A list on Friday and seven Houston-area schools are among the statewide top 25.
Lake Travis and Aledo, who won the Division I and Division II championship games last year, earned the No. 1 and No. 2 rankings, respectively. Both teams return dominating players on the offensive side of the ball for 2010, and their preseason rankings reflect the high expectations for both schools again in 2010.
Lake Travis will have senior quarterback Michael Brewer returning to direct the Cavaliers’ offense. As junior in 2009, Brewer completed 70% of his passes for 4,450 yards and 43 touchdowns in his first season succeeding Garrett Gilbert, who moved on to the University of Texas.
Brewer threw for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns in Lake Travis ’ 24-17 win over Longview in the Class 4A Division I state championship game, helping to deliver the Cavaliers’ third consecutive state title.
Lake Travis enters the 2010 season with a current 46-game winning streak.
In 2009, Aledo found a budding star in sophomore running back Jonathan Gray, and following his 251-yard rushing performance in the Division II championship game, great things are anticipated from him in his junior year during the 2010 campaign.
From the Greater Houston area, Brenham is the highest-ranked team, at No. 4. The Cubs lost in last year’s Division II state championship game to Aledo.
Angleton (No. 8) is the only other Houston-area team among the top ten, but Dayton (No. 12), Friendswood (No. 16), Manvel (No. 20), Crosby (No. 22) and Houston Stratford (No. 24) also made the statewide top 25.
Stratford will be playing their first season as a Class 4A school, after dropping down from 5A, along with Spring Woods and Northbrook from the Spring Branch ISD, in the UIL realignment.
Other teams from across the state that will drop from 5A to 4A and find themselves immediately ranked in the top ten by THSF are Tyler John Tyler (No. 5) and Smithson Valley (No. 9).
