Following the first day of the Spring Branch ISD Volleyball Classic, the eight teams still in contention for the championship trophy look like a who's-who of Houston-area volleyball powers, which should set up an interesting final two days of the event.
After 36 first-day matches involving 36 teams, eight have advanced to the quarterfinal round on Friday at various sites in the Spring Branch ISD.
Cinco Ranch, who defeated El Campo and Hastings, will face Klein Oak at Memorial High School. Klein Oak, in what could be considered a slight upset, defeated Pearland, 2-0, in the second round to advance.
Houston Memorial, one of the host teams in the tournament, advanced with wins over Dekaney and College Park. The Mustangs will play Katy on their home floor on Friday. Katy qualified for the quarterfinal round with wins over Fort Bend Travis and Cypress Creek.
Top-ranked Cypress Woods defeated a pair of teams from the Fort Bend area on their way to the quarterfinals. The Wildcats picked up straight-set wins over Fort Bend Austin and Fort Bend Baptist to set up a match against Katy Taylor, who knocked off Clear Brook and Klein Collins.
Clear Creek and Stratford will play in the fourth quarterfinal, in a rematch of their Tuesday night non-district match that Creek won in three games. The Wildcats defeated Morton Ranch and Cypress Falls to qualify, while the Spartans beat Bush and Foster to earn their spot.
Winners advance to the tournament semifinals, which will be played simultaneously at 10:00 AM on Saturday at Stratford High School. The tournament championship match is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, also at Stratford.
