Mater Dei softball pitching star Nadia Brianne Matthews died Thursday night in Anaheim. The death of the 16 year old's death has been ruled a suicide "by ligature hanging."
Anaheim police were dispatched to the 2100 block of Almont Ave around 8 p.m. on Thursday night responding to a call of a girl not breathing. Mathews was pronounced dead at 8:22 p.m. at UCI Medical Center.
Matthews (known as Bri), a sophomore, had already verbally committed to the University of Arizona.
Bri will not only be remembered for her pitching talents, but for her loving nature. This is the worst possible news for all who have known and loved this young girl, who some say was the best pitcher in the Southern Section. Bri will be sorely missed by her parents, sister, friends, and teammates.

Wake up, people! "Ligature hanging" means she was playing the choking game. Beware parents! Many kids are playing this. Look it up online and learn more. It's the bright, outgoing, athletic teenagers who are playing it the most to get a thrill. They play it for many years to get the head rush and never believe they are going to die from it. Brianne had EVERYTHING to live for. In no way, did she commit suicide. The coroner's office labels it as such
because they do not want the controversy because they do not have a witness. Teenagers do this alone after they learn it in groups at parties. Proof will come to the surface soon from kids who will admit Brianne used to play the game with them. Thousands of teenagers are dying every year from this choking game. Brianne's death must be ruled properly to help stop other kids from dying. Call the orange county coroner's office now and demand justice.
Thank you for that very important information.
This ligature hanging is the term for someone who hangs themselves. There is a sad game people are playing for thrill seeking purposes. However, Bri was no thrill seeker. When you know her character the way we did at the school she attended, you would know this game was not what she was seeking. She had the determination that most adults lack. Also, foul play was ruled out. The only thrill she loved was competition, she was an amazing athlete and wonderful human being. The game you are refering to is scary and targets certain individuals who have certain psychological characteristics. It is something to watch, but it is highly unlikely that is what happened here.
I too, suspect this was the choking game.
Was there a suicide note?
Those that say she wouldn't have played this, surely don't think that she would commit suicide, either. I would rather think this was an accident. But, I admit, I am as lost as everyone else.
Maybe her computer and call phone has some answers on them. Had she searched "suicide?"
My sympathies to everyone. This is awful.
