Amsterdam High School and AAU Girls Basketball Teams Got To experience Living on College Campus

Siena College, hosted a great summer basketball camp, for girls. My daughter, Latifa Walker and her teammates from Amsterdam AAU got to experience living on campus. Some of them were there for a week while others including my daughter came up for the weekend to participate in the team competitions. Which is called Team camp. Team camp was limited to 56 teams having 10 girls on each team. Other camps included shooting camp, commuter camp.

Amsterdam’s AAU had two teams that went to Siena along with their coaches. Coach Eric Duemler, whom also coaches Amsterdam girls varsity team. And coach Matt Vasilow whom coaches 9th grade freshman girls for Amsterdam.

The teams had to play between 6 teams while they were there. The rules were different, whereas they couldn’t foul out. This rule was loved by my daughter and her teammates. Plus they do 20 minutes half’s.

Cristiana Johnson, one of Amsterdam’s’ player, says of the college experience “ it’s cool, I wish we were really in college here. I feel grown up.”

Latifa Walker, said that ” I been here twice it is always exciding. We got to play against older girls like our coach wanted us to do, in order for us to get better. So we had to push ourselves a little harder. We also got to go to bed late. We talked a lot of girl talk. They even had some kind a dorm mother. It was also a little sad, you are like leaving your parents and going to college. Well, now we know what to expect. Well, almost.”

Their were teams there from the Capital District plus, New Jersey, West Canada, Rome, NY, Utica and other areas of New York State. Coach Vasilow team went 3-3

In the shooting camp, where there were overnight campers and commuter campers. Siena College, coaches and some of the players taught the girls, basketball shooting techniques and fundamentals.
Such as how to stand while shooting. Before attempting to shoot, they were told to make sure they had their basic set-up done right. Feet to be shoulder width apart with their weight spread evenly between both. Weight should also be slightly forward on the balls of your feet, knees bent slightly, hips relaxed. If they were right-handed, they placed their right foot slightly ahead of the left and was told to stick butt out slightly (if left-handed, place your left foot slightly ahead of the right).

Although most of the girls knew this already, They still had the desire and willingness to learn
And be coached by a college coach and players. After all this is Siena, one of the capital region top schools.

Sarah Fedullo, an Amsterdam player, whom were at both the overnight shooter camp and the team camp. Said “ I love being able to be with my team and going against teams from around the state. The whole thing was fun.sienasaints.cstv.com/

Since it's so flashy and interesting, basketball shooting is probably practiced and drilled more than any other fundamental. It is what everyone gets the most excited about. It's thrilling for the fans, players and coaches when the ball makes it through the hoop and more points are piled on.

Siena also had boys basketball camp along with a father and son overnight camp. Although I didn’t get a chance to go up and see Syracuse University also had a pretty good camp going on . I know some kids from the Capital district did go up. I will write about that as soon as I get back the information. http:suathetics.com/sports
