After seven seasons leading Franklin, Craig Clayton is out as football coach.
He was told of the decision in a meeting with Franklin principal Willie Dickerson.
Clayton posted a 65-22 record at the school with seven playoff appearances, including a Class 5A runner up appearance in 2008.
Clayton met with his football team at 2:15 this afternoon to tell them of the decision.
The Rebels won a district title in 2006 and Franklin made two Quarterfinal appearances in 2007 and 2009 and Clayton’s overall record is 230-115.
Before coming to Franklin in 2005, Clayton spent 19 years at Hopkinsville high school in Kentucky.
While at Hopkinsville, Clayton made two runner-up appearances as well.
“The decision not to have me back was the administration’s not mine,” Clayton said.
“I don’t think this decision was football related as far as wins and losses but I think it goes back about three years,” Clayton said. “An assistant stabbed me in the back and went to Miss Dickerson (Franklin’s principal.)”
“I got him off my staff that year but this August the administration put him back on the staff against my wishes, so I knew the 2011 season was my last season.”
Phone calls and Emails seeking a comment from Dickerson were not returned.
Despite being relieved as football coach, Clayton will continue to teach at Franklin.
Franklin joins Gallatin, Brentwood Academy, Cleveland, Cane Ridge, Dresden, East Literature, Fayette Academy, Gibson County, Greenfield, Hillsboro, Hixson, Kenwood, Kingston, McNairy Central, Oneida, Stratford, Tellico Plains, Peabody, West Creek, Westmoreland and Zion Christian with open head coaching jobs.
