Summer Pro-Am gives basketball players a shot

Carl Jacobs is a coaching fixture in the high school basketball community. He also has been coaching the San Francisco Pro Am Summer league for the past 11 years. The Pro-Am is a semi-pro league in which players from college and professional players to fine tune their basketball skills during the summer.

Each time the league public starts in mid-June, it is like his coaching re-birth for Jacobs and other bay area basketball junkies.  http://www.sanfranciscoproam.com/schedule-m.htm

“The league is a good opportunity for college guys, local guys and overseas professional basketball players to keep their basketball games tight,” said Jacobs. “This gives them a chance to play at a high level in the off-season.”

Jacobs coaches SF City, a team surprised of various players from local colleges and former collegiate players who may be playing overseas or professionally. Players on this summer SF City pro-am roster include USF standout Dior Lowhorn, Cal’s Jerome Randle and DJ Seely, recent Santa Clara grad John Bryant, current Santa Clara freshmen Kevin Foster and Adonal Foyal of the Orlando Magic.

“We have a nice roster with a lot of local guys,” said Jacobs.  “We are playing basketball at a pro place and this gives my players and the fans that next level feeling.”

The San Francisco Pro AM is the birth child of John Greenberg the director of the league. It began in 1979 as an outlet for the various basketball players in the San Francisco area to play. Fans of basketball would stream from all over to see professional caliber players play at no cost to the public at venues such as Kezar Pavilion and the Potrero Hill recreation center.

At one time, various former pro’s such as Kurt Rambis, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Brian Shaw, Antonio Davis, Jason Richardson and various players who play overseas could be seen playing in this league to packed houses of fans and basketball scouts from the NBA, overseas and colleges looking for the next player.

Those days have largely disappeared as summer leagues in Los Angeles and Las Vegas have overtaken the San Francisco Pro Am league as the premiere basketball summer league in the country. But the San Francisco Summer Pro Am league is still going on. It has expanded into having a woman’s league on Saturday’s and the larger men’s league takes place every night Monday through Thursday at p.m. It is an entertaining brand of basketball that still has a lot of quality.

“The league is still entertaining and it is the best thing out here in the San Francisco bay area,” continued Jacobs. “A lot of players in the past have gotten a lot of out of the Pro Am and this is a good league for players who are still trying to do some things and go somewhere.”

The San Francisco Pro Am plays games usually every weeknight Monday through Thursday at 8 pm from now through August 15th. For dates and times of the men’s games you can check with http://www.sanfranciscoproam.com/schedule-m.htm. For dates and times of the women’s games you can go to http://www.sanfranciscoproam.com/schedule-w.htm.
