BP Oil spill clean up: Fearful Florida authorities take matters into their own hands to save Florida beaches
In the Panhandle city of Destin, Florida, community leaders fearing an invasion of oily tar balls on their white sand beaches, have taken matters into their own hands.
City tourism director Dawn Molentaro had asked BP for help in protecting Destin's white sand beaches 3 weeks ago, but her requests fell on deaf ears. So community leaders took matters into their own hands and set up their own booms.
Like many on the Louisiana shores, residents have been angered by BP’s slow response to the encroaching oil slick that is killing pelicans and other wildlife at an increasing rate. They are pointing fingers at BP CEO Tony Hayward as the reason for the badly managed clean up efforts.
Hayward made it clear in a recent BBC TV interview, that his first priority in the Deepwater Horizon disaster is taking care of his stockholders and his company. Dead and dying wildlife, and the destruction of the livelihoods of fishermen were not mentioned in Hayward’s list of concerns. Nor was the invasion of tar balls on Florida white sand beaches that depend on tourism to keep their local economies going.
Residents in the Tampa Bay area remain on edge about the course of the massive oil slick. NOAA computer models take the projected path of the spill down Florida’s west coast, directly past Hernando, Pasco, Hillsboro and surrounding counties.
Many fear it is only a matter of time before the BP oil spill brings an ugly tide to their own beaches, wetlands, and way of life.

Why should BP actually make progress towards cleaning up the spill? They've got their bosom buddy the Obamanation (and the rest of the Democratic Party) watching their back...
Indeed, you are correct URU.
Oh no. Obama might start figuring out "whose [butt] to kick". Words are tough. Action is tougher.
So far, only words. Only words.
Yes, because the Democratic Party loves seeing helpless animals killed and our oceans ruined. you're right.....idiot.
Bravo to Dawn Molentaro all of Destin management. You can't wait for this BP. They wanted to wait until they could not only cap the leak but salvage the oil for profit. Thats where they put the money and effort into. Not focusing on just stopping the leak and starting the clean up process. Florida has to take measures into their own hands. You just can't wait for BP anymore. We are Americans...UNITE!!! Edward James Olmos told Anderson Cooper this morning that there are tons of volunteers with boats and training ready to go, but were told no. I want to still have my girls weekend on St. Pete Beach or Destin and the only oil I want to see is my Coppertone tanning oil. Lets be proactive now and send the bill to BP. Jack Ass!
Yes Shell the democrats love us. That's why they have done such a good job with this disaster. Their poll numbers just keep sky-rocketing with their effective governing.
It is interesting that when oil or big money interests are involved in such a catastrophe that politicians only speak, but avoid to act in any relevant manner befitting a servant of the people of the United States. Therefore, why don't we start to spin things back in favor of American interests. For example, a good portion of the American food supply could be damaged long term as a result of this oil spill, so doesn't that become a national security issue worthy of invoking the HomeLand Security Act which gives broad powers to the U.S. Government to take over the effort to clean-up the spill and cap the well without regard to BP's effort to capture the oil and save some of their profits?
Also, the Interstate Commerce Clause gives the government very broad powers to act when Interstate Commerce is affected by a private company. In this case Interstate Commerce is the entire fishing industry being negatively affected by BP's poor efforts at containing the oil spill. Many of the comments posted relate to animals dying, which is of course a very very valid concern. However, one thing I learned in law school is that in order to be an effective agent of change in this arena and with these type of high level actors, it is also important to point out to the American people and the Obama administration that we already have laws in place that empowers our government leaders to take swift action. Now the question to ask is why aren't they acting more effectively for American interests? The Interstate Commerce Clause is found in Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. This means our government has constitutional authority to act in our best interests.
Destin has not been effected by the oil so far, the beaches are open and clear. We have been keeping a close look at our beaches this whole situation is unfortunate.
When will you all figure out that neither the democrats or republicans care about the environment, the little guy or the welfare of the planet? It is a matter of profound LACK of compassion that governs the governing in our country. It is very sad. And this disaster cannot be undone. The death of species, of which humans are one, is only matter of time. Shame on your efforts to further harm and divide the world into factions, when it is only through community that this might be changed. Your children will not inherit beauty, but death. Hope you understand that at some point.
uru, didn't you hear Oblama is going to kick some ass,,,why his daughter even came into the official oblama office (bathroom) and asked if he had plugged any holes or kicked some ass.
That is just great obozo is going to let BP go BK.
Yea great the US will pay for all of the US employees that are going to lose their jobs and also the rest of the clean up.
Obozo should be impeached !
Even Osama being in Iran will not plug the oil leak. We don't need a war to distract us from this mess. We need real leadership. Hell, bring in Chevron, Exxon, and all the under water experts to fix this. BP had their chance. Times up! Where are the Jaque Custos, the US Navy, and the Corp of Engineers? Come on stop screwing around with this.
The answer to the oil spill in the Gulf: Oil eating Microbes.
Microbes Will Eat Oil and Turn It Into Non-Toxic By-Products! Why Arent We Using This BioTechnology For The Gulf Oil Spill?

"Microbes have been around a long time and they've been used in situations like this before.
"We have microbes that are adept at eating sewage," We have microbes that are adept at eating grease. and we have microbes that are adept at eating oil. Get the word out! Save our Earth!
