A recent study says, as many as 70 million Americans are lacking proper sleep. Almost one-third get less than seven hours of sleep per night. But the problem can be more serious than just puffy eyes. Sleep deprivation can actually kill you.
1. Death in a car accident - It is estimated that 100,000 car crashes happen each year because of driving drowsy. This contributes to 1,500 deaths and numerous injuries annually.
2. Death at work - Lack of sleep will affect job performance. If a job involves operating heavy machinery or driving a vehicle, injuries or death could happen.
3. Irritability, depression and suicidal thoughts - Deep sleep is essential for feeling well. Lack of good sleep can lead to sad feelings and may contribute to significant relationship difficulties. If it’s chronic, a prolonged depressed state could lead to suicidal thoughts.
4. Weight gain - Obesity is a problem in the United States. Lack of sleep leads to weigh issues. Evidence shows that not getting enough sleep lowers your leptin levels. This results in an increase in appetite and weight gain.
5. Diabetes - Diabetes is associated with increased levels of blood sugar. Studies show that not getting enough sleep can lead to metabolic changes that cause diabetes mellitus.
To get good sleep establish a regular sleep schedule, avoid intense physical activity or large meals before bedtime, and ensure an environment conducive to sleep.

As someone who has fought sleep issues for much of my life and well knows what lack of sleep can do to you, I highly recommend that people explore "cognitive behavioral therapy" instead of drug treatments like Ambien. CBT focuses on helping you make changes to your daily routines and your life to increase the chances of sound sleep. It's not an overnight cure but it changed my life. I recommend (in the metro Atlanta area) Marsha Schectman. Pay her a visit if you struggle to sleep.
I have trouble sleeping at night... I probably would never sleep if I didn't take Tylenol PM. I take 2 every night.. if I don't I stay awake until daylight... just tossing and turning all night.
Great article... lack of sleep causes me to feel hungry at night.
