When I received my Yantra Mat a few weeks ago, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about its declared benefits to users namely that the acupressure therapy mat "soothes aches and pains, improves blood flow that triggers a deep sense of relaxation, and fools the brain to release endorphins". Now, I confess that using the Yantra Mat has become a blissful part of my meditation and nightly rituals.

Originating in Sweden, the Yantra Mat is a beautifully designed acupressure mat that on one side is covered with 8,820 acupressure points or "spikes" made of non-toxic plastic and on the other side is a plush yoga mat. The spikes feel very sharp if you touch them with your hands, but when you lie on the mat either on your back or stomach, the initial "bed of nails" sensation quickly dissipates to heat as a result of increased blood circulation. The company suggests wearing a thin shirt for the first four days until you are acclimated to the "bed of nails" sensation, but I was able to directly lie on the mat by the second day. I noticed that after lying on the Yantra Mat for just 15 minutes, a prevailing feeling of relaxation and occasionally even sleepiness would permeate throughout my body. Therefore, I now use it as part of my daily meditation ritual, on my home office chair if I'm putting in a long day in front of my computer, or if I have had a particularly hectic day, I use it just before bedtime.

I was so impressed by the Yantra Mat, I encouraged my husband and even invited some friends over to try it out. They were all amazed by the deep relaxation and lessening muscle tension as well.

Earlier this year, the Yantra Mat was made available in the United States by Kristina Fine, a yoga and alternative health enthusiast from Sweden. It comes in three sizes, three colors and starts at $49 (excluding shipping).
