Swine Flu and travel in Oaxaca, Mexico: lots to see besides ruins, including giant Tule tree

The 2.000 year old honoroble Giant Tule in Santa María del Tule

With the archaeological zones throught Mexico closed through May 6, which will be after our departure for travel back to Northern California, we've turned our attention to the gazillion activities that can be done as well.

Good thing we're laid back, love-the-outdoors kinda folks who like nothing better than climbing mountaintops to waterfalls (which we did yesterday), crawling through canyons to see birds (ditto) and all kinds of other outdoor adventures.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that we were off to see the giant Tule - a 2,000 year old tree south of Oaxaca city.  Amazing!  15 feet in diameter!

My husband had a hard time fitting the tree in the camera view, which ended up being impossible as you can see from one of his photos above right.

Breathtaking experience, habitat to flocks and fleets of birds.  Don't miss this one if you get this way.

Oh, Swine Flu update.  Really, the hysteria seems to have died down.  Here's the kicker though.  We stopped at farmacia yesterday (actually, 3 of them!) with the thought of grabbing a couple of face masks for the flight home.  Guess what they're out of?  Cubrboca:  face masks!  All of the markets and farmacias have signs in their windows saying "no cubrboca".

We asked at the counter and it was confirmed, though we laughingly responded that perhaps just no masks for gringos!  It's good to see the vendors laugh, their businesses have really suffered with this plague business.

More manana - our last day in Oaxaca!
