A passenger on a Northwest airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit ignited a small explosive device right before landing. The White House is considering it to be an attempted terrorist attack. The passenger identified himself as a Nigerian national "claiming an extremist affiliation". He was placed in custody and is also being treated for burns suffered in the explosion.
There was brief panic aboard, as well as screams as flight attendants rushed to get fire extinguishers. A fellow passenger threw a blanket over the suspects legs to help put out the fire.
One person was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center. All 278 passengers onboard were removed safely and luggage rescreened to ensure safety. The Department of Homeland Security has issued a statement that additional security measures would be put in place to ensure the safety of passengers of domestic and international flights.
