The Motivating Power of Music

Exercising in silence can be quite frightening, particularly for those of us who haven’t been doing it for too long. All of that panting might sound downright unhealthy if you're not accostomed to breathing hard for anything but birthday candles. This strange discomfort can cause you to slow your pace and not give every workout your all. There are certain songs though that you can hear that make you move just a little bit faster and work just a little harder.

Whether you are walking the neighborhood with your iPod or bustin’ a move in an organized aerobics or kickboxing class, you know the power that the right song can have. When you might otherwise give up, the right song can push you past the point where you would normally quit.

Here’s a few classic motivating songs, many of which I personally jam out to:

• Lose Yourself- Eminem
• Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana
• Stronger- Kanye West
• Hey Ya!- Outkast
• The Distance- Cake
• Beautiful Day- U2
• Know That We Found Love- Heavy D
• Push It- Rick Ross
• Eye of the Tiger (duh!)- Survivor
• Thunderstruck- AC/DC

I could go on and on with these. The point is a driving beat can push you a little further than you would be willing to go in silence. Also, putting the music on while you are getting ready to workout will ensure you don’t back out at the last minute!
What is your go-to song for motivation?

Great addition, thanks Melanie! I'm always on the hunt for good music in my MP3 player. I hadn't thought of that one.

I always listen to Go to sleep by Eminem when i'm running. Just a heads up though... terrible language. :S

    EJ-
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I haven't heard that one but I do have "Lose Yourself" on my MP3 for my runs. And I know what you mean about the language- if my daughter ever got a hold of my running playlist I would feel like a horrible parent!
