Nervous about drinking tap water in Indianapolis, IN? A new study from the Environmental Working Group states that there could be good reason to be. Of the 100 “best and worst” cities listed on the studies site, Indianapolis ranks number 90.
Today the Environmental Working Group released findings of a multi-year study on tap water for major cities nationwide. The study tested cities with a population of over 250,000 people and checked for the amount of chemicals present in the water since 2004. Other factors were considered, including the percentage of chemicals present as well as each individual pollutants highest average amount present.
According to the EWG, Indianapolis’ Water system serves 805,341 residents. In the study conducted, 25 total contaminants were found in the drinking water, including 11 chemicals that exceed health guideline. Two of these dangerous chemicals included arsenic and chlorophorm. Of the 11 dangerous chemicals, two not only exceeded health guidelines, but also exceeded the legal limit set forth by the EWG.
Other major cities near Indianapolis, IN tended to fare better in the study, including Fort Wayne, IN, who serves 250,000 residents with tap water, with a ranking of 43 overall. With a total of 19 contaminants found, 10 of the pollutants exceeded health limits, while one exceeded legal limits.
Chicago, IL ranked 34 out of 100. The number one major metropolitan city, with the best tap water listed was Arlington, TX, while the worst was Pensacola, FL.
