On your mark, get set, groove!
Saturday, July 31, marks the first National Dance Day, the brainchild of Nygel Lythgoe, co-creator of "So You Think You Can Dance." The purpose: to encourage the nation to get healthy and gain confidence through dance.
National Dance Day, which is recognized by an official act of Congress, is another opportunity to help get our youth back on the fitness track.
Childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To fight the epidemic, the agency recommends healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and regular physical activity. Dancing is a fun way to get that physical fitness.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Lythgoe explained how the idea of a National Dance Day came to him: "The dance community suddenly came alive with programs like "So You Think You Can Dance," "America's Best Dance Crew" and "Dancing With The Stars."
"I read one morning about the obesity problem and thought this was an absolutely perfect way to try to combat obesity, to get people dancing."
Look for National Dance Day events in your community.
In Huntsville, Jill's Studio of Dance will be at Bridge Street at 1:00 pm Saturday. Instructors will be on hand to teach the Nappy Tabbs routine from "So You Think You Can Dance." Dancers of all ages are welcome. Fox 54 is sponsoring the event.
